Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, whose assassination led to WWI. |
28th July 2014 marks exactly 100 years to the day since the
outbreak of World War I. No living veterans from that conflict now remain, the
last survivor having passed away two years earlier in 2012. Sarajevo, the
capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, experiences a surge in tourism during this
time. This city was the location of Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination on
28th June 1914, an event that triggered the war a month later.*
